Update:
Around 300 people showed up in support of John on a beautiful day for a walk in the park. Craig Olson did a beautiful job of getting donations of water, apples, and candy. He also borrowed speakers from the Canfield band and had music and a microphone for speeches from John, his daughter Amy, and a representative from the northern Ohio chapter of the ALS Foundation. Sheryl Figliano arranged for t-shirts for those who gave donations over $50 with the Rotary wheel and Conti's Crusaders on them. There were representatives from all six of the Rotary clubs in our division at the walk. The fundraiser raised over $13,000, all of which stays in Ohio to help those with ALS and their families, and of course, to help find the cure.
This Saturday, November 1, all area Rotarians are being asked to dust off their walking shoes and join the Walk to Defeat ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at Boardman Park in support of Boardman Rotarian John Conti who is couragiously battling this fatal neuromuscular disease. John's daughter Amy is walking in the Columbus event. She is asking for our prayers and support by making a gift to the ALS Association in her father's honor and/or joining the Boardman walk on November 1 from 10 am to 11 am. Checks can be made to the ALS Association and sent to Sheryl Figliano c/o Boardman Rotary, PO Box 3114, Youngstown, OH 44513 or Craig Olson, c/o Canfield Rotary, PO Box 11, Canfield, OH 44406. Call Craig at 330-565-1358 with any questions.

Youngstown Rotarians are cleaning up. Our part of I-680 between Meridian Rd. and the 711 connector, at least. Our sign from the Adopt a Highway program is just after the Meridian Rd. exit as you go east on 680.
We will be cleaning up about four times a year. Roy Passarelli is in charge of this service project. Please let Roy know if you can help.

It's that time of year again - the start of a new Rotary year and annual dues notice. Consider earmarking your annual contribution to the RI Foundation this year to the Polio eradication program. The Youngstown Rotary Board will match up to $1,000 of our members pledges to Polio Plus. This will help our club to meet the Gates Foundation $100M matching grant challenge this year!

This year's Rotary International theme is "Make Dreams Real." Rotary International President-elect Dong Kurn Lee urges us to use our resources to help curb child mortality. Lee said he was in disbelief when he learned that 30,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, measles, and malaria.
"We will bring clean water to their communities and create sanitation projects that keep children healthy," Lee said.
With the success of our District's water projects in India, we are making a step in that direction.
You can send an e card with the new theme at: http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/Multimedia/Ecards/Pages/ridefault.aspx

Our Scrappers outing on August 27th was rained out and since the season is nearing the end there wasn't a date to reschedule. We will pick a date next year, hopefully earlier in the season in case of a rain out again.
